Does God Care?

When I was growing up, I never understood why my mom always saved stuff, but after she passed I came across this awful looking scrapbook that made sense of her collection. You may know exactly what I’m talking about. It was full of commemorative items like locks of baby hair, a nasty looking tooth, a baby bracelet and some elementary report cards. But as I kept rummaging through the book, I started to notice that not all of the items were reminiscent of happy moments. There was a letter from the principal of a legalistic, private school that almost expelled me in the fourth grade for something I didn’t do. There were records of my mom’s diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and of my parents’ divorce. This scrapbook didn’t recall only good memories but some of the darkest as well.

This morning I was reminded of a truth about God’s scrapbook of our lives. In Psalms 57:8, it says, “You have kept a count of my tossing; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?” It also says in Revelation 5 that God keeps the prayers of God’s people in bowls.

So often we think that God is only interested in the big moments of our lives, but all through the Scriptures we learn that God is interested in every detail. He cares about every toss and turn in a restless night, every miscarriage, every diagnosis, every personal loss, every disappointment, every broken friendship, every pain we face, and every tear we shed. So when you’re in a situation that causes your mind to wonder if God cares, be encouraged by his Word. He keeps record of it all. No parent keeps a record of their children if they don’t care and we have a perfect, full-of-compassion Father.

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.

~Psalms 37:23

Great post Perry. As parents, we know that when our children are hurting or struggling, that's when we draw near to them more any other time. Our hearts are tied to theirs. How much more does our heavenly Father draw near to us during those times in our own lives.
